Designing for Mobile First, Not Last

Was your site created for mobile compatibility? Too many sites are built for the desktop first, and then for mobile devices as an afterthought, if at all. In the past, this method made sense, but mobile usage is increasing with the proliferation of smart phones and tablets.

According to TechCrunch and Cisco’s “Visual Networking Index (VNI) Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast Update”, growth in average smartphone traffic from 2010-2011 increased from 55MB to 150 MB per month. Tablet usage increased from 405MB to 517MB, e-readers from .5MB to .73MB, and laptops and netbook usage increased from 1,460MB to 2,131MB on average per month. By 2016, these statistics are each expected to triple at the very least.
