The Ten Spot Episode 03

In this week's episode we discuss:

The Ethics of Bidding on your Competition

Panelist: Neil Lemons "Being where your competitors are has always been a mantra for traditional advertisers for a long time. Ad sales persons have used this fact to sell more print, yellow page ads, and even TV – pitting one company against another by mentioning a company’s competitors are being represented and they should too. Some Internet and search engine marketers and business owners have turned to this game as well. Several tactics exist which can range from fair play to downright devious. Techniques could range from bidding on a competitor’s name through PPC, organically optimizing for a competitor’s name, to commandeering MySpace profile usernames before they get a chance to own their name. This begs the question how far is too far? What’s smart business, but playing dirty?" Friends, Until I Delete You

Panelist: Jennifer Conley This recent New York Times article discusses the etiquette surrounding virtual, social network friendships - and how one should, or shouldn't go about ending them. Article discusses this in the light of Burger King's recent Whopper Sacrifice campaign, where consumers could gain a free Whopper if they "sacrificed" 10 Facebook friends. Facebook members who were sacrificed were notified via a Facebook message - violating the social communities policies.
