Semantic Markup is the careful selection of [[HTML]] or [[XHTML]] tags to best represent each element on a web page. It is a vital practice to ensure proper information architecture on a web page in earlier versions of web browsers. Before web standards had become popular tags were used in order to achieve a specific visual style rather than to describe the content.
