Why you should increase your marketing budget in a recession.
This presentation by The Economist provides some great reasons for increasing your marketing budget during a recession, which is a tactic I've always believed in. Increasing your marketing spend in a recession is EXACTLY like investing in a down market. It's the "buy low sell high" theory, only in this case, you're drowning out your competition in the process. If you're in a position to increase, now's definitely the time - just be smart with your spend.
Why the Freemium works, and how it's putting a twist on coupon or sample strategies.
These days - free is hotter then it's ever been. With more and more consumers cutting their spending, they're looking to free products, specifically in the online realm, as replacements. What's funny is that this is actually a legitimate, and highly effective (and profitable) business strategy. Known as a "Freemium", where a small minority who pays supports a majority who doesn't, companies from small start-ups to large corporations have experienced success with this model.
Ultimately, it benefits the consumer & the company - and is a business model that will likely grow in popularity during the recession.
