Give 2.0

Give 2.0

Content syndication, social bookmarking, and now the elimination of global poverty? Web 2.0 meets philanthropy on GlobalGiving.com where the Web "unleashes the potential of people around the world and make positive change happen." GlobalGiving connects donors with social and economic development projects around the world and makes it easy to share the love with everyone in your online social network. Give LoveGlobalGiving is a unique collaboration between two entities, a US 501(c)3 registered non-profit and a social enterprise, ManyFutures, Inc. It was started in 1997 when World Bank executives Mari Kuraishi and Dennis Whittle created the Bank's Development Marketplace, a first-of-its-kind event where people from around the world competed for World Bank funds. The event's success unveiled the enormous potential of a global marketplace for philanthropy, and participants asked for a real marketplace that was open year round and operated virtually. Mari and Dennis saw the brilliance of this idea, left the World Bank and launched GlobalGiving. Much like the Kiva.org approach to online philanthropy, GlobalGiving.com lets donors browse an online catalog of causes. While Kiva.org focuses on person-to-person financing for business development, GlobalGiving takes direct donations for established and approved projects with clearly defined objectives and expected outcomes. Donors can find a project by browsing their database by topic, region, or sponsoring organization. They've also developed a donation wizard to help donors identify a project that matches their specific giving preferences. GlobalGiving.com makes it simple to give and track the impact of your generosity on the project(s) you've selected. Each project has a web page where donors can see photos, track progress, read regular updates from the field, and send comments to the project manager. Like any respectable social networking site on the Web these days, each member can set up a public (or private) account with their bio, photo, favorite projects, and donation history, making it easy to meet others with similar passions and concerns. screenshot The GlobalGiving website makes it easy to contribute to the greater good. Group fundraising is facilitated by the creation of a registry. A GlobalGiving registry can be for any occasion a wedding, birthday, or anniversary or simply to generate support for projects. Users spread awareness by posting GlobalGiving badges on their personal blogs or websites and the site is fully linked in to all the social networking and bookmarking tools.
