5 Easy Email Marketing Tactics Vitamin Shoppe Missed

I've gotta say that as a guy who works out quite regularly, I love that Vitamin Shoppe sends me email reminders and promotions. I'm sure you're probably signed up and receive promotions from some of you favorite retailers too; if not why? Since I use my little rewards card every time I go in, obviously they know exactly what products I purchase and tailor their email promos specifically towards items I regularly by. Today, I got an email that had a slightly different take; since the items I buy need to be replenished, they sent a reminder that I might be running out and the listed the items. The idea is great, but they missed an opportunity on 5 easy email marketing tactics and I'll list them here.
  1. Call to Action - Don't just remind me that I'm running out guys, give me the link to the Vitamin Shoppe website where I can actually purchase the items online now!
  2. Offer a discount - You have my attention, I'm a loyal customer reward me with an extra incentive to do it now by saving a percentage off my order; possibly even offer free shipping!
  3. Cross Promote - Since you know what I've purchased in the past, you could also use that as a chance to promote other similar items that might be more elite products or possibly lower cost items.
  4. Rate and review - If you've ever used Netflix, they always send a reminder after you return a DVD asking how it was and if you'll rate and or review the movie; what a great way to get some interaction and feedback from your customers. Since Vitamin Shoppe already has my purchases why not ask me to review them for other customers.
  5. Get Social - No where in the email does it ask me to find them on Facebook or Twitter, now luckily I already follow them in both places; but again another missed opportunity.
I could go on, but I wanted to point out just a few areas where taking just small extra steps could really have a huge impact on the overall success of their efforts. Don't get me wrong, I'm by no means knocking what the guys at Vitamin Shoppe are doing as most companies don't even get it partially right; I just think that if you've got an automated marketing and sales tool you should make every effort to maximize it's effectiveness. What are your thoughts? Does your company have a process or mechanism in place to continually reach out to your customers and maximize the return on what your doing? Is your company using these 5 easy email marketing tactics?
