Drupal vs. WordPress

Drupal vs. WordPress

I've recently been researching the differences between content management systems and blogging engines and thought I would discuss some key differences I've found in Drupal and WordPress. LevelTen has experience installing, configuring and theming both and each has its strengths and weaknesses.

Word press

  • Strengths: IF your intent is to use a pure blogging platform, I recommend WordPress. It was designed as a blogging engine and has since enhanced its functionality to include more content mangement functionality and features.
  • Weaknesses: Its limits seem to be in creating true Web 2.0 social networks where multiple users can communicate in an open forum.

Drupal

  • Strengths: IF your intent and long-term goal is to develop a true social community that allows users to communicate openly then Drupal is by far a stronger and more robust solution. Drupal is a content management framework that incorporates blogging as part of its Core. The true power of Drupal is in its foundational code, hook system and enterprise class design. It's really no wonder business like IBM, Sun Microsystems, Sony, and Warner Bros use and openly promote Drupal as a premier community engine.
  • Weaknesses: Developers beware, Drupal is not for the novice programmer and can have a pretty steep learning curve. But I guess that's what separates the men from the boys!

In summary, the deciding factors come down to your long-term goals for the application. Also, an important factor is your willingness to take on the steep learning curve that comes with using Drupal. In the end, you want to go with the best solution for your personal or organizational objectives.
